Inspiration for a Monday ...

“Teacher” - a 'poem'

Teachers can have a powerful effect on children – for good or ill.  I could offer you examples from my life, but you probably have lots of your own.

Here's a quote which 'hit me between the eyes' several years ago – which I have reformatted as a 'poem'.  I hope you and your colleagues find it as powerful as I did.

Teacher Poem

            Teacher

I have come to the frightening conclusion
I am the decisive element in the classroom.

It is my personal approach that creates the climate.

It is my daily mood that makes the weather.

As a teacher I possess tremendous power
   to make a child's life
      miserable
         or joyous.

I can be a tool of torture
   or an instrument of inspiration.

I can humiliate,
   or humour,
      or hurt
         or heal.

In all situations,
it is my response that decides
whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated,
            a child humanised
               or dehumanised.

            McCroskey (1977) in Cooper (1988) p184
